The purebred cordollian looked a little taller. A head taller than the brothers, and had a more scaly face. This was the first time they had ever witnessed a purebred cordollian. Logan and Dustin froze, unable to take their eyes off it.
[You little shit half-human boys! You sure have no manners, hah? If it weren't for the Lord's order, you'd be torn to shreds now].
This time, they could make out what the purebred cordollian was saying.
Glaring at his younger brother, Logan tightened his grip on Dustin's arm to prevent him from saying any stupid words.
"We're very sorry, but we don't know anything... We don't have anything, so if you could let us go alive..." said Logan in a hissing voice to the purebred cordollian.
He knew even with their new form now, they would stand no chance against the purebred cordollian in front of them. Dustin held his breath.
The creature looked like some kind of reptilian. Its skin was covered in scales and, crucially, its head looked like a half crocodile, half-lizard. Its snout was too short for a crocodile, but its scales and eyes were more crocodile-like than lizard-like.
Of course, technically, it was neither of those things, but something new. The cordollian was only reptilian in head, but underneath it walked on two legs like a man. Compared to lizards and crocodiles, its tail was short compared to its body. Its gait was also somewhat stooped compared to humans, but it was so much bigger that it looked terrifying.
At the sound of Logan's somewhat gruff voice, the cordollian narrowed its eyes. Looking a bit softened hearing it, though unfortunately, he was unable to make out what was being said due to Logan's habitual use of human speech.
[You shit aren't even good at speaking and uncultured. That's not sophistical at all. You should be grateful to the Lord's benevolence for allowing you half-humans as part of us].
The monster still spoke in a harsher tone and more vicious than a whip.
"......"
It pointed out that human language was not sophistical. Logan and Dustin understood a great deal of what the purebred cordollian said, but the syllables it uttered amounted to only a few words.
[Come on, say thank you, you stupid shits!]
Seeing the brothers only standing there staring at each other, the purebred cordollian stomped his foot in frustration and let out a squeaky cry.
"Thank you...!"
Said Logan finally, obediently doing as the cordollian told them, avoiding eye contact. Dustin, who had only been watching him wordlessly, mimicked his brother and let out a hiss.
[Thank you.]
Intrigued by the mad purebred, Dustin deliberately only gave half-hearted politeness. It was the one who treated them like an asshole in the first place anyway, so it deserved the crappy thank you. But the purebred cordollian seemed to like the belligerent Dustin.
[Ha, yeah, so you can mimic a sound? But the words are still short. You bunch of halfwits won't be useful with that unless I train you very thoroughly.]
Only then did Logan realize that the purebred cordollian purposely demanded them to say thank you, knowing that they would not be able to speak its language. It seemed to take pleasure in looking down on and mocking the mutant.
[Follow me, for the Lord has told me to gather and educate those who stupidly wander the streets like you.]
"Are we going to follow it?"
Logan, being the clever boy he was, asked Dustin in human language knowing that the creature did not understand human speech. Dustin, sensing Logan's intent, responded in human language too.
"We have to. Or else who knows what he's gonna do to us."
Of course, he too, was itching to go back, especially since they'd left their father at home alone, but Dustin could feel a chill run up his spine despite the purebred's short sentence.
It was too obvious. This monster was the perfect predator, the top of the food chain of this new world. Rather than confront it, they needed to pretend to follow and learn the new rules that governed the world.
And so they followed the great monster. There was a hustle and bustle as the three cordollians stepped on the items scattered haphazardly on the floor.
The creature was silent as it led them, moving forward without a word. Logan noticed that the creature's scaled tail twitched moderately as it shifted its center of gravity. They were large, glossy, turquoise scales, nothing like the ones that sprouted on the arms and legs of the human mutants. Its tail, thicker than the average human male's calf, looked very heavy, and if someone attacked with it, as Dustin had warned, something unfortunate would happen.
The place where the creature led the two brothers was a vacant lot on a construction site. Although they were given no explanation, the closer they got to the ramshackle clearing, with building materials strewn about, the more the brothers were sure they had arrived at their destination. They could smell the distinctive pheromones of so many mutants and cordollians.
Once they entered the clearing, a group of mutants was seen standing and chattering uneasily. It was easy to tell which were purebred cordollians and which were the poor wretches who had once been human. Most of the mutants still retained their human form or wore clothing, like Logan and Dustin.
"This is ridiculous."
Dustin muttered to himself as he slowly scanned the faces of the assembled mutants. They were far away but now since his eyes specialized in picking up movement, he had no trouble making out their faces. He scanned the group for anyone he recognized but didn't see any familiar faces. For now, Logan was the only one he could trust to be an ally.
"It's weird...they all look like our age."
Logan whispered to Dustin in a low voice. He was right, none of the mutants were old. They were all youthful-looking men. And all of them looked like males. Even if they had been female when they were human, it didn't seem to matter now, because they were all emitting the pheromones of a male cordollian.
Logan remained vigilant, convinced that their scent was much closer to Dustin's than his father's.
[Silence! You half-humans are weaker but you can still catch the sound we make!]
Leading the brothers into the vacant lot, the purebred cordollian let out a loud cry that drew attention. Instead of a short hiss, it was a howl, more like a ferocious beast. The vacant lot fell silent right at that instant.
[You half-shits I must admit that you are still better than those disgusting guys who already got eliminated!]
The purebred cordollian thumped his tail on the ground, calling the eliminated humans atypical and disgusting.
[Congratulations you have passed the first test! You may feel justifiably superior on that score now. You have the very basic qualifications to join our pack!]
Logan and Dustin couldn't understand what the purebred was saying. Had they been tested without realizing it?
[Do not feel sorry for the slaughtered ones. We will guide you to be good members and warriors. All you have to do is be grateful for our mercy and be loyal!]
The purebred creature kept speaking in a tone that was both condescending to humans yet grudgingly favoring them. Then, he motioned several other purebreds—probably his henchmen—to go somewhere.
Dustin swallowed back a curse. First, he was offended by the creature's condescending attitude, and second, he resented the fact that the creature was a jerk but an unbeatable force. Still, he didn't dare venture to complain out loud. His eyes narrowed as he realized that at least half of the mutants standing here shared that sentiment.
Then the purebred's henchmen, who had disappeared somewhere, reappeared. They began to pile piles of freshly cut raw meat in front of everyone.
Soon, the smell of raw meat and blood stirred each mutant there, including the brothers. It was like a reawakening they had long forgotten. Without them realized, Dustin and Logan's eyes were already fixed on the raw meat and their mouths were watering. It smelled so fresh, so different from their usual spoiled processed meat back home.
[Wow, you all look so excited! But since the Lord has been gracious to you, be sure to work hard for Him!]
The cordollian chuckled with a growl. He had expected the mutants to react to these raw meats, but he still couldn't hide his satisfaction at their stupid look. From now on, it would be hard for them to resist their physical nature.
Disobeying orders with a defiant glare was not acceptable for those who occupied the lowest ranks; they would see firsthand the place in the world of the powerful who would hunt them down for being a rebel.
[So, what do you want us to do then?]
