It was morning, two days later.
Just waking up while rubbing his sleepy eyes, Nicholas took the cooked food
from the refrigerator and heated it up. It was the same dark gloomy morning.
[Shhh... Sskh...]
A squeaking sound was heard from somewhere. Nicholas pricked up his ears.
Seemed like it was coming from the living room. Feeling disgruntled,
Nicholas walked into the dark living room and turned on the lamp. There was
nothing.
[Sskh...! Squeak... Grrr...!]
However, the unknown sound kept repeating itself. Nicholas cast his eyes
around to find the source of the sound and finally found the broken radio.
Maybe Dustin was trying to fix it and missing some screws on the way,
causing the ugly noise. Nicholas turned it off.
"I'm gonna throw you away. No, would I get money if I sell you to a junk
store instead?"
Well, better not to expect too much since it was a cheap product. Nicholas
hurried into the kitchen when he smelled something burning.
"Ah, damn. "
Logan said it wouldn't taste good if the food got heated for too long. And
now it became beyond saving. Nicholas even needed the help of a knife to put
the sticky food on the plate. He was upset yet he still stuffed the burnt
food into his mouth. After all, It was his fault for forgetting to turn off
the gas stove.
Nicholas left the house for work.
After the incident the day before yesterday, the atmosphere at the workplace
was terrible. Yesterday, the workshop was back to business as usual, but no
one knew how it would be today.
The bad mood continued even after work. No one knew exactly what was causing
the work stoppage. And the boss was also consistent in saying that he didn't
know anything. Although rumor said that the goods going to the center could
not be returned and even contact with those who delivered them was lost.
Some also commented that this mining farm was losing money and couldn't pay
them. Some others raised another conspiracy theory. Causing the workers to
complain that it might be better to flee than have their wages stolen.
"What's the point of keeping making conspiracy theories? Oh, Green Bull
scored a goal!"
Those who sat in front of the TV at lunchtime discussing conspiracy theories
soon became immersed in the soccer game. Nicholas was sitting in a corner
away from his colleagues, biting into a tasteless bun. Today's breakfast was
already not good, but trying to eat something tasteless even at lunch made
him frown. He couldn't even shave today as he had to deal with the burning
frying pan. He was usually beaten up, but today he looked even more ragged.
"What is that?"
The mouths of the workers watching TV suddenly turned into a question.
Nicholas lifted his head, wondering if the team he was betting money on had
suffered a catastrophic defeat.
But no. Instead of virtual soccer, the low-quality TV was showing another
scene.
Nicholas stared at the TV screen and barely swallowed the bread he was
eating down his throat. His breathing was choked.
On the screen, a blood-covered news anchor shouted with a panicked look.
[Emergency! Breaking news! At 1:07 pm today, the Cordollian invasion has
completely destroyed the city! Everyone, hurry and flee―AAAHHH!]
The news was cut by a sudden appearance of a huge monster eating the news
reporter's head and dragging her away. The scream was deafening. Before
long, the screen showed an empty table where the news anchor had
disappeared. The scream still continued. Just hearing the gut-wrenching
screams and the sound of flesh being ripped apart was enough to make
Nicholas feel her pain.
No one thought to change the channel, just watching the senseless scene with
a perplexed face. Then, the cordollian that had attacked the news anchor
appeared on the screen again. A piece of flesh was stuck in its
blood-stained snout, and its gleaming golden eyes were literally those of a
beast. The moment its eyes met across the screen with a vertically torn
pupil, Nicholas vomited up what he was eating.
"Ugh...!"
He let out a groan and shivered. His throat was clogged. He could not lift
his head, for it seemed that those frightening eyes were right in front of
him.
The workshop in an instant became noisy with buzzing. The workers, excited
by the brutal scene, exchanged words.
"What, is that real?"
"Ah! Our team was winning!"
Some indeed showed a weak reaction like Nicholas but the rest did not
believe since it looked unrealistically brutal. They thought it must be a
clip from some horror movie that was aired incorrectly.
However, when the break was over, no one left. They just stared silently at
the TV that now only showed an empty news broadcast desk.
"Attention!"
The supervisor banged on the workshop wall and drew attention. His face was
as pale as that of a man without blood. His whole body was even soaked to
the bone. He must have run inside the workshop under the heavy rain.
"Did everyone just watch the broadcast...?" he asked in a trembling voice.
No one answered and silence remained. Although his trembling voice and
fear-stained face made the workers sense something was wrong. Through his
facial expression, those who had yet to believe what they saw on the screen
realized that it looked nothing like a mis-aired horror movie.
"What...? Was that...real?"
"......"
The supervisor nodded his head with wide terrified eyes about to cry. He
looked like he was going to collapse. If the situation was normal, someone
would have calmed him down and made him drink some water, but now no one
did.
"We're all f*cked."
